How do you create classes and place students in Course?

In Course, a class is an education group belonging to an institution. You create it with a name, level, teacher, and homeroom. Students join through class memberships, while lesson sessions form the class timetable separately.

The Team Builder screen shows a student pool alongside classes and lets you add, remove, or move students. When placing a student, consider class size, the student's status and institution, room capacity, and warnings about other scheduled lessons.

Create the class and place its students

  1. Choose the institution and identify the class.

Enter a class name and level. Course prevents two classes in the same institution from sharing a name, so check existing classes before creating another group.

  2. Select a teacher and homeroom.

Set the class's teacher and homeroom. A lesson session can have its own teacher and room, so the class record alone does not fix the timetable for every lesson.

  3. Find the student in the pool.

In Team Builder, select the intended student and destination class. Check the student's existing classes, registered institution, and active status.

  4. Review the result of the placement.

After adding the student, check the updated class roster and read any warnings. If a scheduled lesson conflicts with another class or exceeds room capacity, review the relevant timetable.

What information should you review when placing a student?

Team Builder blocks a drop when the destination class's homeroom capacity is full. Other findings appear as warnings, and checks in other enrollment paths may behave differently. Read the warnings even when the student has been added successfully.

Active class sizeSee how many students the destination class will have after placement.
Room capacityCompare class size with rooms that have a positive capacity set.
The student's other lessonsCheck for another placed session in the same day and timetable slot.
The student's institutionAssess a warning if the student is registered at another institution.
The student's active statusSee a warning when the student is inactive.

Why are class size and room capacity separate?

Class size comes from active student memberships; capacity belongs to the room record. If a class has lessons in other rooms, a suitable homeroom does not mean every lesson room has enough space.

Course treats zero or negative room capacity as an unmonitored limit. The absence of a capacity warning therefore does not establish that a physical room is suitable. Enter real room capacities and check the rooms used by placed sessions as well.

How is class membership history retained?

When a student is added, Course records when that class membership began. Adding a student who already has an active membership does not create a second active one. Removing a student closes the membership with a leaving date instead of deleting its history.

If the student later rejoins the same class, Course opens a new membership period. The previous and current periods remain distinct, and these dates are used when evaluating attendance. Avoid repeatedly removing and adding a student merely to make them appear on a class list.

Frequently asked questions

Can a student be added to the same class twice?

An existing active membership is not duplicated. Rejoining after leaving starts a separate membership period.

Does every warning stop placement?

No. The capacity gate in Team Builder differs from other warnings returned after an addition. A successful save does not mean every warning has been resolved.

Does every lesson use the class homeroom?

A lesson session stores its room separately. Check the timetable to see where each lesson is placed.
