Exams and assessment
How do you enter and correct exam results in Course?
In Course, you select a published exam and add students individually or from a class roster. If the exam has an answer key, you can enter each student's sequence of answers. Without a key, you can enter correct, wrong, and blank counts by subject.
These methods do not produce the same level of detail. An answer sequence creates question-level assessments; totals store subject counts. Choose the method that matches the result data you actually have.

Choose how to enter the result
In an answer sequence, use A–E for marked choices and a dash for a blank question. Compare the order with the actual answer sheet. A missing choice in the sequence can be assessed as blank against the key; you still need to check that the sequence you copied is complete.
| Method | Data needed | Detail recorded |
|---|---|---|
| Answers | The exam answer key and the student's choices in question order. | The student's answer, correct answer, and assessment for each question. |
| Totals | Correct, wrong, and blank counts for each subject. | Subject counts, net score, and overall score; no question answers are created. |
Save and verify the result
Select the exam and student.
Check the exam's name, institution, and published status. When adding students from a class roster, confirm that each row belongs to the intended student.
Enter the result data you have.
Enter the answer sequence in question order, or the correct, wrong, and blank totals for each subject. Do not treat a subject you have not entered as a confirmed zero result.
Resolve row validation errors.
Read the validation messages shown in the entry screen. For an exam with a subject structure, an unknown subject or totals exceeding that subject's question count are not accepted.
Open the saved record in the results list.
After saving, distinguish successful rows from failed ones. Open the student's record in the results list and check the totals, subject breakdown, and question detail if present.
What if some rows save and others fail?
The entry screen saves students one at a time and displays each row's status. Successful rows remain saved; failed rows show an error and can be corrected. An error in one row does not undo students saved earlier.
Editing a failed row makes it available to save again. Focus on the rows with errors instead of entering successful results again. Do not assume that every student was saved until you have checked the completion message and row statuses.
What should you check when correcting a result?
The exam and student link is essential to a correction. Also check the class link when the result is associated with a class. Exam, institution, student, and class filters help you find a record in the results list; a filtered list does not represent every participant in the exam.
Saving an answer-based result again using totals can remove its earlier question detail. Change methods only when that loss of detail is intended. If the exam answer key or scoring settings have changed, review the affected results and current rankings again.
Frequently asked questions
Can I filter the results list by class?
You can review results linked to a class with the class filter. Results without a class link may not appear in that group.
Does entering totals create question answers?
No. The totals method stores subject counts; it cannot identify which individual questions the student answered incorrectly.
Does one error cancel every student's result?
The entry screen saves rows separately. Successful rows remain saved, and you can correct and resave the rows that failed.
